Small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) make a key contribution to the coun-try's economy in terms of employment, innovation and growth. The development of project activi-ties can play a significant role in facilitating this contribution, but SMEs require less bureaucratic forms of project management than those used by larger traditional organizations. This article pre-sents a study to determine the nature of project management required by SMEs, and its results. The research findings very strongly suggest that SMEs need a "lightweight" version of project manage-ment.
