In modern socio-economic conditions, one of the tasks of the education system in various countries is to provide a wide range of people with high-quality and affordable education. And today, this can be done with the use of information technology. Information technologies are considered the most important factor affecting the quality of education. The modern education system has a fairly fundamental base that allows you to prepare a fully developed personality, but with the advent of the information age and globalization in education, it is necessary to modernize it with the use of new approaches to the organization of the educational process. This article discusses the definition of "information technologies", their categories, the history of the development of distance learning as a separate type of information technology, and also suggests ways to modernize the technology of distance learning.
