Abstract. This study investigates the practical use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in language education amid rapid digital transformation. Focusing on undergraduate students from Kazakhstan, Russia, and Azerbaijan, a mixed-methods approach collected quantitative data via questionnaires (n = 116) and qualitative insights through semi-structured interviews (n = 35). Findings reveal frequent AI use for language learning, with students valuing personalized support, instant feedback, and flexible access to resources. However, concerns about overdependence and diminished originality emerged. Qualitative data illustrate students’ ambivalent attitudes: while AI aids comprehension and exam preparation, it may impede creativity and autonomous language expression. Results emphasize the critical role of digital literacy and critical thinking in navigating AI tools effectively. The study underscores the necessity of pedagogical frameworks to guide ethical, balanced, and context-sensitive AI integration in language instruction. Practical recommendations are offered to educators seeking to harness AI’s benefits while fostering independent learning and sustaining academic integrity.
